Haute Chocolate …

A Lush Lover’s Feast Not Just for St. Valentine

February is a chocoholic’s dream come true with a national month-long celebration of divinely decadent chocolate delights. With a 3,000 year reputation ranging from sinful to sublime, chocolate has been seducing cultures worldwide long before Cupid ever quivered. Talk about an enduring love affair! No wonder the Aztecs called it “Food of the Gods.”

Chocolate, as we all know, goes hand in hand with affairs of the heart. But we’ll bet you didn’t know just how heart healthy this tempting treat truly is. While chocolate… the darker the better…is often seen solely as an indulgent pleasure, it has actually been shown to benefit the heart and circulatory system, having recently been categorized as a Super Food for its high concentration of antioxidants. So, whether you embrace this “Chocolate Revolution” in the snack drawer… or the boudoir… you’re sure to succumb to its sweet and savory temptations. Take a walk on the dark side; there’s never been a better time to eat to your health. After all Lover, who needs broccoli when you have Triple Chocolate Cake?

Here are February’s Recipes for Romance:

Asador

Now here’s a sensual, seductive chocolate dessert drink. Nuts and Berries is a delightful cocktail of Frangelico, Chambord, Vanilla Vodka and cream topped with shaved chocolate and sure to melt in your mouth. It is a perfectly sweet finish to this restaurant’s acclaimed fresh and local fare. Follow your heart. ..Start with dinner… Stay for drinks… or even the night.

El Ranchito

Even before eating dessert, you can participate in the Celebration of Chocolate at El Ranchito. You and your own tasty temptress are sure to savor Pollo en Mole, two pieces of chicken topped with mole, the sultry traditional Mexican sauce prepared with unsweetened cocoa.

La Calle Doce

An after dinner treat of Triple Chocolate Cake is the preferred choice at La Calle Doce. Made with heaps of Mexican chocolate, this Sanchez family recipe is sure to delight the taste buds plus be the sweetest ending to your meal with your sweetheart.

Lazaranda Mexican Seafood Grill

If you’re looking for a less traditional celebration of chocolate, why not try the Chicken in Mole Negro Sauce from Lazaranda? A grilled chicken breast enrobed in a delicious spicy chocolate mole sauce is served atop lush, creamy potato puree. Talk about the thrill of the grill.

Mignon

Mignon in Plano features a delightful White Chocolate & Grand Marnier Bread Pudding topped with Butter Pecan Ice Cream. This blend of sweet and salty is sure to please those hungry taste buds. Share sweets with your sweetie before April in Paris.

The Cedars Social

The smooth and light Raspberry Pot de Crème with Chocolate Beignets is the perfect pairing of vanilla, raspberry and chocolate. The beignets are fluffy with a deep chocolate flavor, while the raspberry pot de crème is smooth and sweet, complete with a raspberry surprise at the bottom. Surprise your Valentine with this sweetest of kisses.

The Social House

Hey Cupid! Don’t be stupid. What’s a better dessert than a piece of decadent Chocolate Cake paired with a Chocolate Martini? For only $10, diners at The Social House in Addison can sample the heavenly flavors of these two devilishly delicious desserts during the month of February. Wise men say only fools love today but you can’t help falling in love with this pairing… especially when shared with your special someone.

Urban Crust

Few places can create a dessert that revisits us in our dreams but one of them is Urban Crust in Plano, home of Jeanne-Marie’s Chocolate Cake. This rich, mouthwatering mountain of dark chocolate cake layered with dark chocolate frosting is the solution to any sweet-tooth craving. It is the memorable creation of celebrated Chef Salvatore and named for his lifelong love. It’ll keep you coming back for more. Now Valentine, how’s that for sure-fire shiver in her quiver?

Tastes and Times to Treasure

Asador

Move over breakfast, Asador’s “Power Lunch” is in the running for most important meal of the day. The restaurant, located in the Renaissance Hotel off of Stemmons Freeway, offers a pick-me up of seasonal, local food in the middle of an otherwise busy workday.
Urban Crust

This month, Urban Crust in Plano is offering a mouthwatering vegan pizza sure to delight taste buds. Whether you’re beginning a New Year’s health kick, a practicing vegan or just an all-around veggie lover, this pie made from 100% whole wheat pizza dough and topped with a delectable combination of spinach, portabella mushrooms, rapini, sun-dried tomatoes, basil and caramelized onions will let you indulge without the remorse.

Lazaranda Mexican Seafood Grill

The Dallas Morning News boasts that Addison’s newest venture into affordable coastal Mexican cuisine, Lazaranda Mexican Seafood Grill, ‘is a good place to explore the genuine wonders of Mexican seafood and it’s a distinction worth noting.’ The restaurants’ name comes from the ‘zaranda,’ a wire basket used in Mexico to cook seafood over a fire, and offers over five types of ceviche, as well as seafood cooked over the fire four different ways. The kitchen also offers seven other styles of preparation for seafood that doesn’t involve the grill, and a tempting array of healthy salads for the conscious eater.

The Social House

The Super Bowl is quickly approaching, and The Social House has everything you need to watch the playoffs. With over 50 beers on tap and happy hour specials on drinks AND food, you won’t miss a second of play time. Not to mention the 153-inch projector screen, which lets you inspect every detail of game play. Who needs an owners’ box when you can make The Social House your playoff and Super Bowl destination?

El Ranchito

In case you missed all of the sparkly jumpsuits and black wigs, El Ranchito recently held their annual Elvis Impersonator Competition. The winner took home a $500 cash prize and the title of Elvis Impersonator 2012 …Thankyouverymuch! The contest started back in 2003 when El Ranchito’s general manager, Juan Sanchez, brother of co-founder Laura Sanchez, wanted to honor his favorite singer.

La Calle Doce

In Lakewood, La Calle Doce is a great destination for gathering with friends to catch up over a margarita during happy hour. Take some time to yourselves, leave the real world behind for a little while, and get caught up in conversation while enjoying some of the best happy hour specials in town! The bar renovations at the Oak Cliff location are complete. Come see the newly expanded wraparound bar with plenty of room for your next happy hour party. Check their Facebook page for photos of the new, spacious patio and bar areas.

The Cedars Social

With new GM Jenny Strickland and the release of their winter cocktail menu, 2012 has been a productive year for the folks over at The Cedars Social. “Cheers” to the New Year, and Jenny, with a Smoke Forbids, made with Siembre Azul Reposado and House Apple Smoked Ice. That’s right, they’ve also figured out how to smoke ice.

South Side on Lamar

When it comes to art forms, ArtLoveMagic’s annual Underground event pretty much covers them all: painting, dancing, music…you name it. When you put this many artists in one place, things are bound to get weird. Don’t be surprised if you see a group of dancers interpreting a local artist’s statue of a nearby jazz musician into choreography. In this creative environment, anything goes. Underground Preview Night is free to attend January 27 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at South Side on Lamar. More information available at www.artlovemagic.com.

JY’s “In My Head”

This time of year is very reflective at the Yarbrough house. Not only in what we have accomplished for our family, community and church…but why is the freezer so full of meat? With that in mind, it makes me think about stews, chili and smoking. I love sitting out on our back patio with friends – drinking a cold Shiner Bock and chasing it back with a little Ole Smoky moonshine while we are cooking. So take a peek, thaw out your brains and get to cooking!!…and right after you finish cleaning the kitchen make a reservation somewhere for dinner and reward yourself for all that hard work.

Lazaranda Brings Premium Seafood to Addison at a Casual Price

ADDISON, Texas (January 11, 2012) – After a quiet opening at the end of last year, Lazaranda Mexican Seafood Grill is introducing affordable coastal Mexican cuisine to Addison. Having noticed an absence of family-friendly seafood spots, Owners Mario Letayf and Antonio Marquez jumped at the chance to bring their concept to Addison. Although this is his first stateside venture, Letayf and Marquez own five successful restaurants in their native Monterrey, Mexico. Named for the ‘zaranda’ often used in Mexico to cook seafood over a fire, the restaurant offers premium, grilled seafood at a casual price.

The menu at Lazaranda is a reflection of Letayf’s and Marquez’s palate, featuring a collection of fresh, seasonal seafood. Diners may choose from four different methods of grilling their fresh fish selection: Zarandeado, a house special mix of garlic, mustard, chipotle and soy sauce; Rancho, crushed red pepper, mayonnaise, olive oil and a touch of soy sauce; Grilled with olive oil, a touch of mayo, salt and pepper; or Talla, marinated in achiote and served with grilled pineapple.

The kitchen offers seven other preparations that don’t involve the grill, such as: Veracruz with tomato sauce, olives, capers, peppers and white wine; Ajillo with olive oil and garlic sauce; Fiorentina with butter sautéed spinach in a white wine cream; and even breaded and fried options. With so many dishes to choose from, the knowledgeable wait staff is on hand to help diners put together a meal that tickles their taste buds.

Diners looking for a lighter preparation of Lazaranda’s fresh catch can feast their eyes on the menu’s selection of Mazatlan Shrimp Aguachile, shrimp marinated with lime, spices and serrano aguachile, or choose from more than five types of fresh ceviche, including Aztec Fish Ceviche, which consists of grilled cactus leaves, marinated tilapia, avocado, onions, tomato, cilantro, spices and fried pasilla pepper. Lazaranda is committed to serving only the freshest and finest seafood, and its selection varies based on market availability.

If seafood isn’t your choice, Lazaranda offers an array of healthy salads from mixed greens with grilled vegetables, panela cheese and sautéed peanuts with an option of adding grilled chicken, to their Marinated Cactus and Avocado Salad with red onions, tomatoes, panela cheese and a touch of olive oil. Signature entrées include marinated and grilled rib eye served with potato puree and veggies and beef tenderloin Cañita, center cut beef tenderloin grilled to order and topped with cactus leaves and caramelized onions over a dried chile sauce. Even if you are looking for more traditional Mexican items like tacos, enchiladas or quesadillas, the “a la carte” selections are endless with blue crab enchiladas, lobster tacos, mole enchiladas and street tacos under $3 a piece.

The full bar boasts more than 30 tequila options, which pair with fresh squeezed juices to fuel the house margaritas. Happy hour specials are also available, featuring $3 house margaritas and $4 glasses of house wine. Lazaranda has the perfect patio setting for customers to enjoy full service seating, a must when the warmer weather comes back around.

Burger House Celebrates 60 Years with 60-Cent Cheeseburgers

DALLAS, TEXAS (November 18, 2011) – Local institution Burger House will celebrate 60 years in business on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, with contests, giveaways and 60-cent cheeseburgers.

When Burger House first opened its doors on Hillcrest in 1951, Dallas was quite a bit different than it is today. With just four lanes, newly opened Central Expressway stretched just over two miles from the northern edge of downtown to Northwest Highway. Families gathered around black-and-white television sets to watch the popular new sitcom “I Love Lucy.” Still just a high-schooler in Memphis, Elvis’ gyrating hips wouldn’t send SMU girls into a frenzy for another five years. A cheeseburger fries and a drink would set you back less than a dollar.

A lot has changed in the past 60 years, but Burger House’s loyal customers know that some things are just too good to mess with. That’s why the burgers, fries and shakes at Burger House are made the same way today as they were way back in 1951. For one day only, on December 13, Burger House will make one welcome change. To celebrate their milestone anniversary, all Burger House locations will serve their famous cheeseburgers for just 60 cents and give away special prizes throughout the day.

Burger House on Mockingbird, located at 6248 E. Mockingbird Lane, will support local schools with a French-fry eating contest for students from 3 to 5 p.m. The first student to finish their basket of fries will win free fries for a year, as well as a donation to their school.

Free burgers, fries, shakes, hot dogs, T-shirts and hats will be given away throughout the day to diners who complete an info card in store. Current patrons are also being encouraged to sport their Burger House t-shirts for the celebration. Hourly prizes, including free burgers, fries and milkshakes for a year, will be up for grabs at Hillcrest and Mockingbird locations. One grand prize winner will win a 50-person hamburger party catered by Burger House, a $650 dollar value.

Burger House owners Angelo Chantilis, Jr. (Sonny) and Christopher Canellos are excited to give back to the community that has supported them for the past 60 years.

“What started out 60 years ago is still going on today, and we couldn’t have been here without our loyal customers,” says Canellos.

“I’m most excited to give back to the neighboring schools with the fry eating contest,” adds Chantilis. “The kids have been making up their own contests for years, so it’ll be great to actually reward their schools for all their practice.”
